Ingredients
- 8 slices white bread, buttered
- 75g sultanas
- 3 eggs
- 400ml milk
- 100ml double cream
- 75g caster sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ tsp nutmeg
- Demerara sugar, for topping
Method
- Cut the buttered bread into triangles.
- Layer the bread in a greased slow cooker, scattering sultanas between layers.
- Whisk the eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, and nutmeg together.
- Pour the custard over the bread. Press down gently so the bread soaks it up.
- Sprinkle demerara sugar over the top.
- Cook on LOW for 2-3 hours until the custard is set but still has a slight wobble.
- Serve warm with cream or custard.
Tips
Use slightly stale bread — it soaks up the custard better. Brioche works amazingly if you want something extra indulgent.
